(1) You must have the program "info"
(which is part of the GNU texinfo distribution)
to make use of this.
If you do have the program
"man info" should tell you something about it.
(If you don't have the program and you want to use it,
you will have to get texinfo*.tar.gz from prep.ai.mit.edu
and compile it.)
(2) The line in kpathsea.texi to which Karl was referring is
* Kpathsea: (kpathsea). File lookup along search paths.
(3) Probably $infodir = /usr/local/info,
although it could be /usr/gnu/info or /usr/info.
If you have the file $infodir/dir,
it will be clear where you can add the line above.
(It doesn't matter where you put it; you misunderstood Karl.)
(4) If you don't already have the file kpathsea.info,
you must create it from kpathsea.texi
with the program makeinfo (also part of texinfo):
makeinfo kpathsea.texi
Then you must put this file in the $infodir directory
(or alternatively, edit the line above to replace (kpathsea)
by (<path>/kpathsea) where <path> is where kpathsea.info resides.)
(5) I think all except adding the line to $infodir should have been done
automatically by "make".
(6) As will be clear from the above,
all this has nothing to do with kpathsea;
it concerns the GNU texinfo programs.
